Reader Top Ten Greatest Science Fiction Films of the 1970s: Christopher Dalton

Friend and reader Christopher Dalton is the first out of the gate to send me his reader top ten for the greatest science fiction films of the 1970s.

Chris’s choices are:

10. Star Trek - The Motion Picture (1979)

09. Alien (1979)

08. Moonraker (1979)

07. Superman-The Movie (1978)

06. Capricorn One (1978)

05. Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

04. Logan's Run (1976)

03. Soylent Green (1973)

02. Silent Running (1971)

01. THX - 1138 (1971)

Chris: This is a great list, and I am especially happy to see Star Trek: the Motion Picture make a second tally, as I feel it is the unheralded jewel of the Trek movie franchise, and the most cinematic and visually-accomplished of all the movies.

Also, it is terrific to see George Lucas’s “other” sci-fi film take the number one slot.  THX-1138 is an uncompromising work of art about humanity lost in a white-on-white dystopia, and it even features a nice final jab at the movie’s “State,” particularly that cost-overruns prevent the capture of the fugitive (Robert Duvall).

Don’t forget, readers, send me your lists: Muirbusiness@yahoo.com.

  1. Dalt, we park our Lola T70s in the same garage. Blessings of the state, blessings of the masses.

    Thanks, John. :)

Cannon - Thou art a subject of the divine, created in the image of man, by the masses, for the masses. Dfinitely a classic from George Lucas's pre-Star Wars days. :)

  3. Not to be critical, but aren't films like Superman & Star Wars considered fantasy as opposed to science fiction? There is nothing, not one thing, even remotely scientific about Superman and especially Star Wars.
